His father, Daniel Leatherman died in 1854, less than 2 years after coming to Iowa. John enlisted with Company C, 9th Iowa Infantry in 1861 and fought in the Civil War. At the Battle of Pea Ridge, he was seriously wounded and discharged. One year later he re-enlisted. He was sent to Helena, Arkansas for garrison duty until the end of the war. His wife, Matilda Jane Peyton was born 17 Apr. 1844 in Lawrence County, Indiana. John Henry Leatherman and Matilda were married on Jan 1, 1867 in Troy Mills, Linn County, Iowa. John died in Walker, Linn County, Iowa on Nov. 26, 1912.
