James Calvin McPherren


James Calvin McPherren was born about 1842 in Grant Co. Indiana.  His parents were James and Jane (Shaw) McPherren.  James Calvin served in the Civil War in as a Private in Company C, 36th IL Infantry (Shelby County, IL), and Corporal in Company I and A, 1st Mounted Infantry Regiment, Mississippi Marine Brigade. He married Adella Elizabeth McFadden on Nov. 19, 1867 in Boonesburro, Boone County, Iowa.  She was born March 1, 1845 in West Albugh, Grandland Co., Virginia. The family stayed near Quincy, Iowa until about 1871, when they moved to Kansas. While in Iowa, Calvin worked in the coal mines near Carbon. They stayed in Kansas four years until the grasshoppers ate them out. They returned to Quincy, Iowa in 1874 or 1875, where Cora was born. They went back to Mercer County, IL for 6 years. Calvin died about 1922 in Republic City, Kansas. Elizabeth died in February 1926 and was buried in Washington Cemetery, 3 miles East and 1.5 miles North of Republic, Kansas (row C, lot 19). Children Cora and Herbert are buried nearby.
