Shearer Genealogy

of Grant, IN and Mercer, IL and Madison County, IA

This Shearer family of Mercer County, Illinois begins with John Shearer and Mary Ann Walter, both of Ohio.  They were married on January 11, 1829 in Guernsey County, Ohio.  In the mid 1830's they moved to Grant County, Indiana then to Mercer County, Illinois by 1855. Nicholas Shearer moved to Illinois in 1851, then returned to Indiana in 1852 to marry Elizabeth McPherren, daughter of James McPherren and Jane Shaw. After marriage, they returned to Mercer County, IL. In 1885, Nicholas had 160 acres of farmland, free of debt.  John and Mary Shearer moved to Madison County, Iowa before 1867. John & Miriam Shearer (verbal transcription error?) show up in the 1870 Census of Lincoln Township, Madison County, Iowa with children John, Malissa & Noah and grandchild, Hugh. They do not appear in the 1880 Census. Three sons, Francis, Hugh and William, were in the Civil War. Francis Shearer was in the 102nd Illinois Volunteers and died of measles at Fort Donelson, TN. Hugh and William were in the 36th Illinois Volunteers and also died of measles in Raleigh (Rolla), Missouri.

Jeremiah (Jerry) Shearer and family lived in Grand River Twp., Madison County during the 1900 Census. At this time, William, Emma, Elizabeth and James were living at home.  His wife, Mary, was not listed.  Charley Shearer, wife, Emma, and daughter, Mabel, are living in Grand River Twp. Elijah and wife, Emma, are living with her parents in Webster Twp.

Josiah (Joseph) McKibban and family lived in Jackson Township, Madison County, Iowa during the 1900 Census. At this time, Joseph W., Iva, Mary, Austin and Fred were living at home. Frank McKibban (McKibbons), wife Lolina, and children: Mable, Besse & Glenn were living in Monroe Twp. William and wife, Laura, and daughter, Estella, were living in Grand River Twp.
