Hannah Maughan

Hannah Maughan was born in Whickham, Durham (just outside of Gateshead) in 1820. Hannah's parents were John Maughan & (Jane Shields ?). Hannah and Richard Wilkinson were married in September 1835 in West Rainton, Durham, England.  By 1840 they had moved to Hetton le Hole then East Rainton, and had three children. On June 2, 1840, Hannah Wilkinson was born to Richard and Hannah.  At this time, Richard was a pitman for one of the nearby collieries (coal-mining village and mine). By the 1841 Census, they had three children, Jane, James and Hannah. By 1844, they had moved to Framwellgate. By 1851, they had moved to Houghton Le Spring, and had a total of 5 children living with them. In September 1865, Hannah Wilkinson left England for America to join her husband-to-be, John Cox, in Illinois.  By 1881, Richard had retired from the mine (at age 66) and he, Hannah and their grandson, Richard Cummings (age 14) were living at 4 Newbottle St. in Houghton Le Spring. Hannah was living with her daughter, Elizabeth Skidmore, at 2 Low Hill Side, Houghton le Spring in 1901, and died on 28 Nov.1902 of "senile decay".
