Elisha Headlee was born in 1798 in North Carolina of Joshua M. Headlee and Suzanna. He married Nancy Ann True of Virginia in about 1817 in North Carolina. Nancy's mother was a cousin of Benedict Arnold. They moved to Greene County, PA by 1818. In 1828 he was listed as occupant of 439 acres of unseated land named "The Boyne" between Hacklebander and Rudolph runs. Elisha moved to Rush County, Indiana in 1829 and then to Madison Township of Tipton County, Indiana in the mid 1840's. He remained there for the remainder of his life.
Maria Headley, daughter of Elisha and Nancy, was born on Dec. 26, 1819 in Greene County, PA. Around 1841, Maria and her grandparents came west to Keokuk in Lee County, Iowa. She married Samuel Hardesty in Keokuk in 1843. In September 1852, Maria, Samuel and their four children came west from Lee County, Iowa to Adams County, Iowa with an ox team, a horse, a cow and 20 head of sheep. They settled on a homestead 1 mile SW of Carbon. They were among the first pioneers to settle in this region.
