Samuel was born on June 9, 1817 in Belmont County, Ohio to Solomon Hardesty and Catherine Warren. He moved with his family to Guernsey County, Ohio then on to Spencer County, Indiana. In 1839, Samuel and one of his married sisters came west to Lee County Iowa. They settled near Sugar Creek. After Solomon's death in 1841, Catherine joined her children in Keokuk. On September 10, 1843, Samuel married Maria Headley (Headlee) in Keokuk, Iowa. Maria's parents were Elisha Headley and Nancy Ann True.
In September 1852, they came west to Adams County, Iowa with an ox team, a horse, a cow and 20 head of sheep. They settled on a homestead 1 mile SW of Carbon, Iowa. They were among the first pioneers to settle in this region.
Samuel died on November 12, 1891 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery near Quincy. Maria died on December 27, 1891.

greeting: Whereas, Samuel Hardesty of Adams County, Iowa had deposited
in the General Land Office of the United States, a Certificate of the Register
of the Land Office at Kanesville whereby it appears that full payment has
been made by the said Samuel Hardesty according to the provisions of the
Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820, entitled "An act making further
provision for the sale of Public Lands" for the West half of the North East
quarter and the East half of the North West quarter of

14 in Township seventy two, North of Range thirty five West in the District
of Lands subject to sale at Kanesville, Iowa, Containing one hundred and
sixty acres, according to the Official Plot of the Survey of said Lands,
returned to the General Land Office by the Surveyor General, which said Tract
has been purchased by the said Samuel Hardesty....
