The obituary of James McPherren from the Adams County Free Press -
Corning, Iowa Nov. 8, 1900:
James McPherren was born in the County Down, Ireland, August 20, 1820. He was married to Miss Nancy Reddick and to them were born three children, one son and two daughters. James R. McPherren, the eldest who lives in Filmore County, Nebraska, and Agnes Phillips of McConnelsville, Ohio, still survive him. Mrs. Sarah Fleming, the second daughter, died in Illinois about seven years ago (1894).
In the spring of 1848, Mr. McPherren with his family came to America. Soon after their arrival in Pittsburg, PA., his wife Nancy died and in the fall of 1848, he with his three children moved to Mercer County, Illinois, where on Jan. 28, 1849, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah Fleharty. To them were born seven children, four sons and three daughters, six of whom survive him: George Neal McPherren of Lincoln Township; John H. of Iveyville and Edmund H. the youngest who is single and resides with his sister, Mrs. Gilbert Hicks near Cromwell; William, who died in infancy; Mrs. Fanny M. Lincoln of Logan County, Kansas and Mrs. W.S. Lyons with whom he resided at the time of his decease.
Mr. McPherren came to Adams County in the fall of 1867, being among the pioneers of the County. He settled on a farm five miles north of Corning, where he resided until his children grew to manhood and womanhood, all of whom married and left the parental roof except the youngest son.
In Dec. 16, 1888, the messenger of death took from him his devoted wife and helpmeet but he being so attached to the old home, felt it his duty to still make it his home which he did for several years, until his strength began to fail him, by years of hard and earnest toil. When by persuasive influence of his children he left the old farm and came to live with his daughter. Mr. McPherren was a good neighbor, a devoted husband, a kind and loving father. The last year of his life was one of very feeble health. His last words were that he could cross the river and be home. His children were all present during his last illness except Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Lincoln. Funeral occured Tuesday at 10 am from the residence of his daughter Mrs. W.S. Lyons, conducted by Rev. A.Y. Cupp, assisted by Revs. Ream and Lovejoy. Internment in First Baptist church cemetery, Washington Township (near Mt. Etna, Iowa).
